The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) after extensive excavations has established it beyond doubt that there did exist a grand temple at the Shri RamaJanmabhoomi site that was razed down to build Babari structure. The excavations done by ASI establish that the holy site was occupied prior to 7th century BC.
The ASI carried out excavation at the holy site from 12 march 2003 to 7 march 2003.
One of the results of the excavation was that during the first millennium B.C, while there were no structural activities, culture has been represented by terracotta figurines of female deities with archaic features. Excerpts of the report can be viewed here.
